Description
Eric Tompkins was a member of the Technical Department at Fort Dunlop for over forty years. After a spell in the factory he worked on the design and machine testing of tyres for racing and the world’s speed record. Eighteen years on tyre performance problems followed, including the war period, when he wrote the text of the Air Ministry instruction book on tyre servicing and supervised the making of a related training film for the R.A.F. After returning to Tyre Design he was in charge during a period when the team was able to make many significant advances in tyre safety. Over the last twenty years he has contributed over ninety articles on practical tyre problems to the trade press.
This book traces the development of the pneumatic tyre, from the first inspired idea of R. W. Thomson, in 1845, and the reinvention in terms of the bicycle by J. B. Dunlop, in 1888, to the tyres of today, with their capacity for high speed and safety. The book is the first published account of the pneumatic tyre for almost sixty years and is based on fifty years active participation in the work described.
