Description

From the Monte Carlo rally to New York’s Vanderbilt Cup, from Le Mans to the continent of Africa, from Spa to Monza, Jean-Pierre
Wimule developed his skills so as to be considered by his peers the finest driver of the immediate post-war period.

From the roaring twenties onwards, his career and his driving style displayed the rigour and precision which would characterise the new Formula 1 World Championship, inaugurated in 1950.

Before the Second World War, he unfailingly defended the honour of Bugatti in the face of the all-conquering Silver Arrows. During the War it was his beloved France he was defending, fust in the airforce, then as an agent for the SOE.

He also found the time to design and build a road-going saloon; a true precursor to modern Gl cars. I broughout, he was confident he could prove his worth, and he got that opportunity between 1946 and 1948: unbeatable at the wheel of an Alfetta. “A bientôt la revanche” he had always said, « Revenge will come soon »… He had got his revenge.

Only his tragic and untimely death, at the wheel of a Gordini in Buenos Aires, prevented him from becoming motor racing’s first
World Champion.
