Description

For the first time, the great events of motoring, from its beginnings among the nineteenth-century pioneers until 1965, are presented in one book. The entries encompass a great deal of information and are presented year by year, so that the milestones emerge easily, from the first official speed record in 1898 onwards.

Similarly, the extraordinary growth of the car industry can be traced from the handful of pioneers in 1890 to over 700 manufacturers in 1905, and back to handful of giant corporations in the 1960s. Fashions in cars appear and disappear: a selection of nearly a hundred advertisements from the motoring press illustrate the changing styles up to 1939, while in more recent years the main developments are noted-the rise and fall of the fin and the wraparound screen, for example.

Each year’s entries divide into two sections, general and racing.

Full racing records are given for the earlier years, and a selected list for more recent years, headed by the Grand Prix results. Details of the various racing formulas and of general trends in racing are also set out and there is a comprehensive index.

First edition in very good condition with clean, tidy dust wrapper in clear protective cover. Nice example
