64 pages telling the ups and downs of the tram from horse drawn to electric cars.

The late 19th century witnessed a dramatic growth in the population of Europe and, for the first time, increasing numbers of these new citizens resided in urban areas. For these burgeoning centres of industry to operate efficiently there was a need for good local public transport and the late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed another revolution – that of the tram.

Initially horse- or steam-operated, tramways evolved in scale and efficiency as electric power was adopted. Most significant towns and cities in Britain and Europe had, at some time, an electric tramway and even in countries that had largely initially rejected the tram, new second-generation systems are appearing as a once-derided form of transport makes a startling come-back.

Softback in excellent condition.
